A lawyer in his hometown of Guben, he came home from university during the Thirty Years' War because his mother wanted him near. He rose to town councillor and eventually mayor. Alongside civic work he wrote about 110 hymns, most of them printed by his friend Johann Crüger, including "Jesus, Priceless Treasure."
