A lawyer in Frankfurt, he was a close friend of Philipp Jakob Spener and helped prompt the small devotional gatherings that launched German Pietism. After Spener left the city he drifted toward separatism and stopped attending Lutheran services altogether. "Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above" comes from his pen.
