Composer
Johann Schop
1590–1667 · Lower Saxony · Germany
A violinist of rare skill, he played at the Danish royal court in Copenhagen before plague drove him back to Germany. From 1621 he directed Hamburg's municipal music and served as organist at the Jacobikirche, refusing repeated invitations to return to Denmark. Many of his tunes were written for his friend and neighbor Johann Rist, including ERMUNTRE DICH, which carries Rist's Christmas hymn in our hymnal.
