As a teenager he walked long distances just to hear other organists play, and once stretched a month's leave into four to sit under Buxtehude. For the last 27 years of his life he was cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig, writing music for the Lutheran service week after week. The chorale harmonizations in our hymnal come from that work.
