Johann Steuerlein

1546–1613 · Schmalkalden, Thuringia · Germany

Trained in law at Wittenberg, Steurlein was town clerk of Wasungen for twenty years while also serving as cantor and organist of its Lutheran church. He then moved to Meiningen, where he was at different times notary and mayor. He put both Testaments into German rhyme and published his hymn tunes in collections of 1575 and 1588.
