Composer
John Antes
1740–1811 · Frederick, Pennsylvania · United States
Raised among Pennsylvania Moravians, he learned watchmaking at the movement's center in Herrnhut, Germany, and then spent eleven years as a missionary in Egypt. He finished his working life managing the affairs of the Moravian settlement at Fulneck in England. Music was a sideline, but it yielded anthems, string trios, and more than fifty hymn tunes, including MONKLAND.
