John Chandler
1806–1876 · Witley, Surrey · England
An Oxford-trained Anglican priest who succeeded his father as vicar of Witley in Surrey. He wanted hymns as old as the prayers in the Anglican liturgy, so he translated about a hundred Latin hymns for a collection in 1837. His versions were loose but singable, which is why they outlasted more literal ones. "The advent of our God" is one of them.
