John Ernest Bode

The son of a Post Office official, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and stayed on as a college tutor and classics examiner before taking country parishes at Westwell and then Castle Camps. In 1855 he gave the Bampton Lectures in defense of the Christian faith. His 1860 collection of hymns for each Sunday's Gospel reading is remembered chiefly for "O Jesus, I have promised."
