A boy chorister at the Chapel Royal who sang in the Covent Garden opera chorus as a young man. For more than thirty years he was organist of St. Paul's Cathedral in London while also teaching at the Royal Academy of Music, and he pushed to raise the standard of English cathedral music. He edited several psalm and chant collections.
