A store clerk and later a newspaper editor in Batavia, New York, he was licensed as a Methodist preacher at twenty-one and eventually pastored a Free Will Baptist church. His mother encouraged him to write verse. In 1891 the gospel singer Ira Sankey hired him to write hymns exclusively, and "Faith Is the Victory" came out of that arrangement.
