Warden of Sackville College, an almshouse in East Grinstead, from 1846 until his death, he widened its care to poor women and orphans and founded a sisterhood that trained nurses. Poor health and his High Church leanings kept him out of ordinary parish life. His many translations of Latin and Greek hymns, among them 'O come, O come, Immanuel,' he gave freely to the church without claiming any rights.
