Trained at the General Baptist College in Leicester, he moved into Unitarian ministry, serving congregations in Sheffield and Glasgow before returning to Leicester. He founded the monthly paper The Truthseeker in 1863 and compiled eight hymnbooks for churches and schools. Of his own hymns, the children's prayer "Father, lead me day by day" traveled furthest.
