Born in Tullahoma, Tennessee, into three generations of Nashville musicians tied to the Fisk Jubilee Singers, whom his grandfather's choristers helped found. After degrees from Fisk, Columbia, and Yale he taught at Fisk for nearly forty years and directed the Jubilee Singers himself. He collected and arranged African American folk songs, including the spiritual "Go, tell it on the mountain" sung here.
