John Wesley

17031791 · Epworth, Lincolnshire · England

At Oxford he belonged to the small circle of devout students mocked as "Methodists," a name that stuck to the movement he later led. A failed mission to Georgia sent him home in 1738, and the decades that followed were spent preaching across Britain and publishing theological works. While his brother Charles wrote the original hymns, John supplied the translations from German.
