1712–1768 · London · England
A London teacher of classical languages whose early years swung between loose living and bouts of guilt. A sermon at the Moravian chapel in Fetter Lane at Pentecost 1757 settled him, and in the next two years he wrote most of his hymns, including "Come, ye sinners, poor and needy." From 1759 he pastored an Independent chapel in Jewin Street.
