Composer
Joseph Parry
1841–1903 · Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire · Wales
At nine he was working the furnaces of a steel mill in Merthyr Tydfil. His family emigrated to a Welsh mining town in Pennsylvania in 1854, where he later opened a music school. Neighbors helped pay his way to the Royal Academy of Music, and he became a professor at Aberystwyth, the town that named his tune for "Jesus, lover of my soul."
