The daughter of a bishop and a suffrage campaigner, she married a Welsh-born clergyman who later became Dean of Leicester Cathedral. Together they wrote a history of Peterborough. For The Oxford Book of Carols she translated and loosely paraphrased Welsh carols, and "Now the joyful bells a-ringing" is her sacred text for the tune everyone knows as "Deck the Halls."
