Author
Katharina von Schlegel
1697–1777
Almost nothing is recorded about her beyond a birth date in 1697 and a connection to Cöthen in central Germany, either as a resident of the Lutheran women's foundation there or as a member of the ducal court. Letters from the early 1750s survive. Her one lasting hymn, "Be still, my soul," reached English readers through Jane Borthwick's 1855 translation.
