After teaching voice and piano at private schools in Concord and Philadelphia through the 1920s, she left the classroom to compose full time. She produced around eight hundred works, mostly choral and often under pen names. Her "Carol of the Drum" from 1941 is the piece the world sings as "The Little Drummer Boy."
