After a short stint at the University of Rostock he went to Kiel to study music, and from 1684 served as cantor and music director at Bremen Cathedral. A hymn writer of the German Pietist school, he built his texts on the Gospel readings for each Sunday and festival. "Rejoice, rejoice, believers" comes from his 1700 collection.
