Leo Sowerby

1895–1968 · Grand Rapids, Michigan · United States

He led an army field artillery band in England and France during the First World War, then became the first American composer awarded a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. Back in Chicago he taught at the American Conservatory for nearly forty years and served as organist at St. James Church. His Canticle of the Sun won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946.
