Raised on a farm near Davenport, Iowa, he studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago alongside the future evangelist Billy Sunday. His working life was spent with the YMCA, in Iowa and later as general secretary in Fort Worth and Santa Barbara. Hymn writing was a sideline: he said many of his two hundred songs, including "There Is Power in the Blood," grew out of sermons he heard.
