Composer

Louis Bourgeois

15101561 · Paris · France

A Parisian who wrote songs for wealthy patrons before and after his years in Geneva, where he arrived in 1541 and became music director under John Calvin. He used his choirboys to teach the congregation the new psalm tunes and supplied most of the melodies for the 1551 psalter. Some of his revisions of older tunes annoyed people enough that he spent a night in jail, until Calvin got him released. Old Hundredth is his.
