An English governess who emigrated to America around 1871 and wrote her first hymn after an Ohio camp meeting. In 1876 her husband drowned in Hempstead Bay while rescuing his young son. She later remarried in South Africa and spent decades as a Methodist missionary in what is now Zimbabwe. "'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus" was published in 1882, the year of that second marriage.
