Beethoven never wrote music for congregations, yet the tune Hymn to Joy was adapted from the choral finale of his Ninth Symphony. A skilled viola and organ player by fourteen, he built his fame on symphonies and sonatas. Total deafness in his final decade did not stop him from composing his greatest works.
