Author
Martin Madan
1726–1790
Trained for the bar, Madan changed course after hearing John Wesley preach and took holy orders, becoming chaplain of the Lock Hospital in London. His 1760 collection of psalms and hymns shaped Church of England singing for a century. He wrote no hymns of his own, but his skilled reworking of other writers' texts is the form many of them still take.
