Melcmor Vulpius
1570–1615 · Wasungen, Henneberg · Germany
Born into a poor family named Fuchs, he never attended university and Latinized his surname while teaching Latin at Schleusingen. From 1596 until his death he was a Lutheran cantor in Weimar. There he wrote a St. Matthew Passion and over four hundred hymn tunes, some of which brought lively Italian dance rhythms into German congregational song.
