Michael Praetorius
1571–1621 · Creuzburg · Germany
Raised in a firmly Lutheran home, Praetorius spent most of his career as court organist and then music director to Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick at Wolfenbüttel. He wrote more than a thousand pieces of church music, including the sixteen-volume Musae Sionae of Lutheran hymn settings. His harmonization of Es ist ein Ros is the one most congregations still sing.
