She and her husband were active Methodists who worked the camp meetings at Sebring and Mount Vernon, Ohio, and she wrote hymns while doing her housework. Blind from age 52, she kept composing on a 28-foot blackboard her family built for her. Nearer, Still Nearer is hers in both words and tune, and she is credited with around a thousand texts.
