A Boston writer and reformer, Cheney was widowed three years into her marriage to the portrait artist Seth Wells Cheney. She then threw herself into causes such as the Freedmen's Aid Society and the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, and she lectured on the history of art at the Concord School of Philosophy.
