Daughter of the Methodist evangelist Walter Palmer, she married at sixteen a founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and later gave much of her inherited wealth to charity. She composed over five hundred gospel songs, and her tune for Blessed Assurance is still sung nearly everywhere.
