N. Allen

1812–1877

After studying with Lowell Mason in Boston, Allen spent his career at Oberlin College, where he taught music alongside geology. His 1835 Oberlin hymnbook introduced the tune Maitland, paired with Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone. A century later Thomas Dorsey reshaped that same tune for Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
