A pastor's son, Grundtvig fought the rationalism of his day so sharply that in 1826 he was suspended from the Danish church for thirteen years. Restricted to afternoon services in a German church in Copenhagen, he spent those years writing and compiling a hymnbook for the Danish church. He died at 89, the day after preaching.
