Composer
Nikolaus Herman
1500–1561
For decades Herman was schoolmaster and cantor at Joachimsthal, a Bohemian mining town, where he wrote hymns for the schoolchildren and for families at home rather than for church services. It was said that whenever the pastor Mathesius preached a strong sermon, Herman turned its ideas into a hymn. His own tunes rank among the best of the Reformation era.
