A physician and Harvard professor of anatomy, Holmes earned his wider fame with prose and verse that mixed humor and pathos. He never set out to be a hymn writer, yet a few of his hymns took hold. Lord of All Being, Throned Afar dates from 1848 and appeared in his Professor at the Breakfast Table. He was a Unitarian.
