Author
Paul Gerhardt
1607–1676 · Gräfenheinichen, Saxony · Germany
Gerhardt pastored the great St. Nicholas Church in Berlin until 1666, when he lost the post for refusing an elector's edict he believed compromised Lutheran teaching. He wrote through the Thirty Years' War and buried four of his five children. More than 130 of his hymns appeared in his friend Johann Crüger's collections, and John Wesley and Catherine Winkworth later carried them into English.
