Intended for a military career, Abelard turned instead to philosophy and theology in Paris. His secret marriage to Heloise, niece of a cathedral canon, and his rationalist views brought him a life of upheaval and two condemnations for heresy, at Soissons in 1121 and at Sens in 1140.
