Philip Paul Bliss

1838–1876 · Clearfield County, Pennsylvania · United States

Bliss left home as a boy to work farms and lumber camps, then became a traveling music teacher who made house calls on horseback. On D. L. Moody's advice he turned singing evangelist, and with Ira Sankey he published the Gospel Hymns series. He died at 38, with his wife, in a train wreck and fire on the way to sing at Moody's Chicago Tabernacle.
