A professor at the Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Carter was licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church and threw himself into camp meetings and revivals. When his health gave out he trained as a physician and wrote novels alongside hymns. Standing on the Promises is his, words and music.
