A Union Army veteran of the Civil War, Hudson taught five years at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, then started his own publishing company there. A firm prohibitionist, he issued The Temperance Songster in 1886. He added the refrain and tune that turned Watts's Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed into At the Cross.
