Born in Dublin, he served as a curate in Norfolk and then in Soho before chronic illness ended his parish work. He spent the rest of his life writing, producing some fifty works on liturgy and theology and finishing his friend John Mason Neale's commentary on the psalms. He translated hymns from many languages, among them the Italian 'Come down, O Love divine.'
