Brother of the writers Nathaniel Parker Willis and Fanny Fern, he studied at Yale and then spent six years in Germany, where he became a friend of Mendelssohn. Back in America he worked as a music critic for New York papers and founded his own journal in 1862. His tune Carol, written in 1850, carries 'It came upon the midnight clear.'
