Largely self-taught, he was playing violin and cello by the age of ten and singing in a church choir. He led the singing at Paisley Abbey and later at St. George's Church in Edinburgh, where he made the precentor's craft an art and lifted the standard of Scottish psalm singing. He adapted the tune Martyrdom and published his church music in Sacred Harmony.
