A Cambridge divinity graduate from a Suffolk family, he served as a prebendary of Bristol and was made dean of Bristol Cathedral only weeks before his death. His hymns come from a small 1664 pamphlet, The Young Man's Meditation, nine sacred poems that include 'My song is love unknown.'
