Samuel Webbe

Apprenticed to a cabinetmaker at eleven after his father's early death, he taught himself half a dozen languages while learning the trade. As a Roman Catholic he found work as organist at the Portuguese embassy chapel in London and later at the Sardinian and Spanish chapels. He wrote music for Catholic services and published nine collections of glees.
