1680–1732 · Shepton Mallet, Somerset · England
An Independent minister who began preaching before he was twenty, he pastored at Portsmouth and then in London from 1716. A breakdown in 1723 left him convinced that God had taken away his soul, yet he kept on writing and preaching with undiminished energy. His 1720 supplement to Watts's hymns included 'Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove.'
