Author
The Venerable Bede
673–735 · near Monkwearmouth, Northumbria · England
A monk in Northumbria from boyhood, he was made deacon at nineteen and priest at thirty and never left the twin monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow. He wrote on nearly every subject of his age and left a book of hymns in several meters, most of them woven from Scripture. About a dozen hymns are credited to him, and his bones now rest in Durham Cathedral.
