Theodore Baker

Born in New York, he studied music in Leipzig and wrote his dissertation on the songs of the Seneca people, one of the earliest studies of Native American music. From 1892 to 1926 he was literary editor and translator for the publisher G. Schirmer, and his English versions of 'We gather together' and 'Lo, how a rose e'er blooming' date from those years. He compiled the first major music dictionary to include American composers.
