Apprenticed to a shoemaker after a wild youth, he was converted at eighteen on hearing George Whitefield preach. John Wesley took him on as a traveling preacher and he spent 25 years on the road, later helping Wesley edit the Arminian Magazine. He wrote 'The God of Abraham praise' and was buried in Wesley's own tomb in London.
