After college in Battle Creek, Michigan, he published his first hymnal in Boston in 1902 and then moved to Chicago at the invitation of the publisher Peter Bilhorn. He settled in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1932, where townspeople knew him as the man who walked about with a canvas bag of songbooks to sell. He wrote both words and music of 'Who can cheer the heart like Jesus.'
